1946 in Switzerland by Hans Gfeller Jr. and Hans Gfeller Sr.
Technology Roots:
Gfeller AG was a telecommunication company best known for their telephones. They manufactured their first portable hearing aids in 1946.
Historical Highlights:
1949 saw expanding interest in the Gfeller hearing aids, with sales contracts in North Africa and the Middle East
Thanks to the use of transistors instead of mini vacuum valves, hearing aids moved from portable units to behind-the-ear units in 1954
In 1973 Gfellar AG shifted its primary focus to hearing aids
In 1982 T-Series hearing aids were the first to be equipped with integrated circuits and two small chips inside
Gfeller AG merged with Autophon, Hasler, and Zellweger to form Ascom in 1987
In 1991, the PHOX became the world’s first digitally programmable hearing system
In 1992, Ascom takes over the hearing instrument division of Bosch GmbH
Ascom is sold to William Damant Holdings in 1994
Changed name to Bernafon in 1995
