Understanding Veterans Affairs Canada’s Benefits for Hearing Loss

Apr 9, 2024

We’re so appreciative of our veterans, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and the RCMP for all that they’ve done to serve our country. Canada is known for supporting our veterans, and it's only fitting that this commitment extends to hearing care.

Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) offers a range of benefits for veterans who have served their country and need access to professional hearing care services. Whether it’s due to noise exposure during service, age-related hearing loss, or other factors, VAC provides essential support. Let’s explore VAC’s hearing healthcare benefits, eligibility, and how veterans can access these services.

What Benefits Does Veterans Affairs Canada Offer?

Hearing loss is a common issue among veterans, particularly those who have been exposed to loud environments such as combat zones, military training, or machinery operations. Veterans Affairs Canada offers a tax-free disability benefit to help veterans manage their health conditions and improve their quality of life.

VAC covers a range of hearing-related services, including hearing assessments, hearing aids and devices, follow-up appointments and adjustments, and tinnitus management. The amount awarded depends on two factors: the extent to which the condition is related to military service and the severity of the condition, including its impact on the individual’s daily life.

Eligibility for the Disability Benefit

To be eligible for a disability benefit from Veterans Affairs Canada, you must belong to one of the following groups:

  • Members or veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces

  • Current or former members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)

  • Veterans of the Second World War or the Korean War, including those who served in the Merchant Navy

  • Certain civilians who were involved in the Second World War

How to Apply for Veterans Affairs Canada Hearing Health Care Benefits

Applying for VAC hearing healthcare benefits is a fairly straightforward process, but it’s important to have all necessary documentation in order. You’ll want to provide as much detail and evidence as possible to ensure a smooth process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process:

Start by getting a comprehensive hearing assessment from a qualified hearing healthcare professional. This assessment will help you understand the degree of your hearing loss or tinnitus and provide the necessary documentation to support your application.

The next step is to submit an application to Veterans Affairs Canada. This can be done online, by mail, or in person at a VAC office. The application should include the results of your hearing assessment and any other relevant medical documentation.

Once your application is submitted, VAC will review the documentation and make a decision regarding your eligibility. If approved, you will receive coverage for the necessary hearing healthcare services.

After approval, you can access professional hearing care services from VAC-approved providers. It’s important to choose providers familiar with VAC procedures to ensure smooth processing of claims and payments. Our team at Dion Hearing has extensive experience with VAC, and we’re here to help you get the most out of your benefits.
